Criminal investigation launched against Turkish journalist
 05 Aug 2026
An investigation has been launched against Ilke TV reporter Zilan Azad. It concerns an interview titled, “While the men in suits play their own chess game, women are trying to survive.”

The interview, conducted with Selin Top of the Women for Peace Initiative, addressed the investigation into the disappearance of Gülistan Doku, testimonies shared by women in Dersim, and various allegations concerning "male criminal networks" that have long been debated in the public sphere.

Following the interview, Cem Tekinoğlu, an adviser to New Party MP Cemal Enginyurt, filed a criminal complaint against Ilke TV reporter Zilan Azad and Selin Top over allegations concerning himself that appeared in the interview. He accused them of "insult," "defamation," and "violating personal rights."

Zilan Azad and Selin Top are scheduled to give statements today as part of the investigation. In a statement on the case, the Turkish Press, Publishing and Printing Workers' Union (DISK Basın-Iş), affiliated with the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), said: "We stand in solidarity with our colleague Zilan Azad. Journalism is not a crime. Reporting carried out in the public interest cannot be silenced through judicial threats and pressure."
