A new investigation published by BIRN Albania reports that hundreds of recently created social media accounts have been used to simultaneously disseminate pro-government content and coordinated messages targeting supporters of the ongoing anti-government protests in Albania.

According to BIRN, the accounts, many of which were reportedly created at the end of June 2026, shared identical posts, memes and attacks directed at journalists, activists, opposition figures and other individuals publicly supporting the protests. The investigation cites technology experts who describe such activity as coordinated inauthentic behavior designed to artificially amplify content and influence social media algorithms.

BIRN also interviewed former public administration employees, who alleged the existence of organized internal structures coordinating the distribution of political content through messaging groups. The Office of the Prime Minister rejected any connection between the government or public administration and the alleged network of fake accounts, describing the claims as unfounded.

The investigation raises broader concerns about the use of coordinated online campaigns to shape public discourse, target critics and contribute to a hostile environment for individuals participating in public debate.
