Albania ranks 83rd in RSF 2026 Index
 04 May 2026
Albania ranks 83rd in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, marking a slight decline following last year’s improvement.

At the global level, the Index reaches a critical point: for the first time, more than half of countries are classified as having a “difficult” or “very serious” situation for press freedom. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), this decline is driven by a combination of pressures, including restrictive legal frameworks, hostile political discourse, economic fragility, violence and impunity, and the role of under-regulated platforms in shaping the information space.

Within this broader context, Albania’s trajectory over recent years points to a pattern of fluctuation rather than sustained progress. Changes in ranking have not been consistently maintained, indicating that underlying conditions affecting media freedom remain largely unchanged.

This pattern reflects broader structural conditions across the media environment. These include uneven application of legal safeguards, continued political and economic pressures on media, and ongoing challenges related to sustainability and market dynamics. Together, these factors shape the environment in which journalists operate and influence the ability of media to perform their public interest role.

At the regional level, Western Balkan countries remain closely grouped in the Index. Albania (83rd), Kosovo (84th), Bosnia and Herzegovina (90th), and Serbia (104th) continue to face similar structural pressures. RSF notes that several countries in the region, including Albania, remain exposed to hostility towards journalism and vulnerability to propaganda .

Recent developments in Albania place increased attention on how existing legal and regulatory frameworks are applied in practice, including in relation to media governance, institutional accountability and the broader enabling environment for journalism.

The SafeJournalists Network will continue to monitor developments in Albania and the region, including trends affecting media freedom, journalist safety, and institutional responses.
